Second Annual National Expungement Week (N.E.W.) - September 21-28

Organized by the Equity First Alliance and Cage-Free Repair, the second annual National Expungement Week (N.E.W.) will begin tomorrow through September 28, 2019, with events in over 30 cities nationwide. The Equity First Alliance is a coalition of more than three dozen organizations dedicated to reparative justice, racial equity, and the cannabis industry to highlight the need to fully integrate those disenfranchised by the war on drugs and the over-zealous prosecution of minor and non-violent offenses. This year’s National Expungement Week will be feature events intended to educate the public by way of clinics to help remove, seal, or expunge prior convictions and criminal records, as well as provide general criminal justice workshops. It is important to know that ANYONE in need of an expungement or record-sealing processing, education, or other supporting services is welcome!

N.E.W. events have inspired local leaders, teams of dedicated attorneys, organizers, and activists nationwide to continue to increase expungement opportunities and services where possible. Cities featuring organized events have nearly doubled since in the past year and now include major hubs such as Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Honolulu, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. You can find all of the participating events here at N.E.W.’s Event List.

The inaugural N.E.W., which ran from October 20-27, 2018, is credited with leading 298 people to record clearing and sealing, which resulted in a public benefit of over $3 million in its first year alone. Over 400 individuals have also received related legal and social services including employment resources, voter registration, and health and wellness screenings. Although Oklahoma’s recent medical cannabis laws have gained more social acceptance, the current political climate and and the laws themselves present a web of legal procedures and restrictions that result in denied petitions and lost time and resources.
